Can you believe the change? February 3, 2009

What would happen if YOU evaded taxes and didn’t have a stable of New York City or Washington, DC, lawyers? You go to jail!

Not if you are a President Obama cabinet choice like these:

Nancy Killefer – First Chief Performance Officer, Not!

Tom Daschle – HHS Secretary, Not!

Tim Geithner – evades taxes then becomes head of the Treasury and IRS…for now!

Gee, makes Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney look like a Boy Scouts by comparison. This isn’t disturbing news…it’s terrifying.

For those, like me, predisposed to believe candidate and now President Barack Obama’s character and policy proffers are truly flawed, this is simply another validation of that predisposition.

For those who elected this man for his “Change You Can Believe In” mantra, well, so far, so bad when it comes to vetting nominees and character judgment.

Then there’s this from Fox News today:

“President Obama has garnered widespread support for his early actions in office, but Americans strongly oppose the commander-in-chief’s first two executive orders — allowing federal funding for overseas abortions and closing Guantanamo — according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans said they disagreed with the president’s decision to give overseas funding to family planning organizations that provide abortions, according to the survey taken between Friday and Sunday. Thirty-five percent supported it.”

Lots of promise. Lots of rhetoric. Lots of hollow victories at the outset. The President might be learning that signing executive orders is fun but doesn’t translate into support from the nation.

But let’s focus on the President’s apparent inability to make significant choices for cabinet that don’t possess substantial flaws. Lucky for him, Nancy and Tom backed down. That powder keg is diffused. Tim will be a lingering problem if not addressed quickly. The president has some political cover since Congress approved him. Still, it reflects poorly on a president who frequently appears to make bad choices. Blame his advisors? Sure, they get some blame, but who picked THEM?

As Harry Truman’s legendary sign stated: The Buck Stops Here. Whether its bad advice or simply poor decisions on his part, President Obama needs to step up and make some right decisions very soon.

He can start by paring back the Democrat Pork Gov’t Growth Plan (aka Economic Stimulus Plan). Knock out money for NEA, Acorn-type groups, and other liberal sweetheart programs and invest hundreds of billions in infrastructure, not $30 billion. It’s the world turned upside down.

It’s not change anyone can believe in.
