Not Anytime Soon (respite) May 1, 2008

Medical forms, toothaches, neighbor’s kids selling lemonade,

and it’s not even warm, not even June but I’m ready to fade.

I could sit in my room and read most of the summer if left alone,

but work and friends and curiosity make me reach for the phone.

Today, it’s wireless, mostly, but I still keep one on the wall

cause when the satellites explode, I’ll still want to make a call.

We can romanticize about the intimacy we know we have lost

and the moments we have spent and never counted the cost,

but this is no time for dismal memories, it’s time for dinner.

And, as long as I can cook and bake, I won’t be getting any thinner.

Not any time soon.
