Post No Bills April 24, 2008

Posters tell me to “Post No Bills” and I wonder at the wisdom,

like the government books with pages stating

“This page is left intentionally blank”

and it’s really no wonder the slackers this society has spawn(ed).

Burma Shave had it right to entertain us while we were in our cars

enjoying this new traveling experience on the Mother Road,

stopping at every Stucky’s and staying at Howard Johnson’s.

The first billboards had humble beginnings, like country musicians

who came down from the hills, and then it became all formula,

big cowboy hats and entourage, Hank wouldn’t recognize it,

but he knew it for what it was and he was a casualty of it.

And maybe it chewed up Patsy Cline and spit out Buddy Holly,

and maybe I know we can’t reclaim lost ground but maybe

I don’t want to believe it, and maybe I can take a different path.

I’ve got the Texaco Fire Chief on my side, riding the winged Mobil horse,

heading across the Texas panhandle of my life, straight and flat-out.

What we don’t need is another lesson in political correctness,

you call a spade a spade and let the chips fall as they may

however cliche it is, however trite to even contemplate.

it’s time to re-think the change everyone believes they want

and change back to what we all really need.
