Even though March 24, 2008

When the neighbor waved, the sun broke through,

like it was meant to be, through that broken sky that snowed

or spit sleet down at us on and off all morning.

The neighbor backed out of her drive and drove away

in full sun, against a strong breeze that was chilly for Spring.

Even here, I thought, winter didn’t want to let go,

even though it was mild, even though it wasn’t too cold.

Up north there is flooding along the Meramac and the rain and

tornadoes took their toll, even though it wasn’t too bad,

we forget about last year or the other ugly years before

and we are fixed on today even though its fleeting,

even though it slips through our fingers, and

out of our memories so quickly.
