If Jimmy Stewart Could Sing November 26, 2007

If Jimmy Stewart could sing

and the warble could be understood for what it was,

then we could better understand Alfred Hitchcock

or, at least, we could begin.

If Jimmy Stewart could sing

and it was like a drunken uncle on New Year’s Eve,

would we be more tolerant or less harsh

if we critiqued his performance the morning after?

If Jimmy Stewart could sing,

would he understand our eyebrows raising with his attempt

or strike at us in righteous indignation?

No, he would gently laugh and mutter under his breath.

If Jimmy Stewart could sing,

would Rear Window rival West Side Story

for its music as well as its story?

Mere speculation, fodder for the gods.
