Weddings and Marriage July 23, 2007

I have my thoughts on weddings and marriage.

The former should be simple to allow for the complications of the latter.

 Then, there is my daughter

Who comes alive when there is ceremony and drama.

Who embraces the spotlight before a camera or before our eyes.

Hers is a life of singing and performing, so there must be a wedding,

there must be ceremony.

And these things forgive her when she fills a vacuum

with her moral high ground, senseless twaddle,

and bluster and blow of sophisticated ingénue.

I have my thoughts on weddings and marriage.

The former should be smooth to allow for the coarseness of the latter.

As these words create a snapshot of this moment,

they attempt to capture the past.

The sacrifices of a little girl to save her brother.

The terror of an attack by a playful Great Dane.

The acceptance of people of other cultures and values.

The sea of emotions crossed during high school.

The fear, joy, solitude, and fraternity of college years.

And, today, a wedding.

I have my thoughts on weddings and marriage.

The former should be a celebration to allow for the sameness of the latter.
