The sky is threatening April 19, 2007

I don’t know how you can say “the sky is threatening” –
It’s the clouds domain, their billowing and bellowing that threaten,
Thunder booms and lightning crashes striking fear –
Not the sky, it’s benign and helpless in this cause.
It is colorless, transparent, holding no weapons to harm us
And no temperment for destruction or pain.
Yet we continue to say “the sky is threatening.”
The sky allows the sun and stars to shine.
The sky is open and uncluttered.
The sky knows nothing of rain or wind or violence of weather.
The sky is charitable to all without judgement.
A child has no fear of sky, no reason to fear it by nature.
Adults enjoy the sweeping generalization especially when it is false.
Truth is absolute for a child but relative to a wise adult.
Yet we continue to say “the sky is threatening” without remorse
As if it were true, a reflection of reality, when it is not.
You can enter a sullen country and the sky is constant.
You can see forbidding clouds and feel unrelenting wind
And the sky is constant, waiting like a mother at home for her children.
Always never closer or farther away – clear, never needing clarity,
Neither hot nor cold, it knows nothing of burning or freezing.
If it were an archangel, it would be Gabriel not Michael,
It bears no sword and has no need to protect or defend.
Don’t ask about my disbelief when you say “the sky is threatening” –
Few things are further from the truth.
The sky allows the sun and stars to shine.
The sky is open and uncluttered.
The sky knows nothing of rain or wind or violence of weather.
You can enter a sullen country and the sky is constant.
Thunder booms and lightning crashes striking fear –
Not the sky, it’s benign and helpless in this cause.
Yet we continue to say “the sky is threatening.”
It’s the clouds that mask the sky, cover it in whole or in part,
And the suffering is borne of the clouds, not the sky behind it.
When the water rises and condenses it does not change the sky,
It’s clouds that loiter and blow around the sky
But the sky does not change, it is constant.
