Flight Attendant March 30, 2007

It is a life of hurry up and wait.
Years ago it was thought to be glamorous,
a seventies jet-set life, different cities everyday,
and the lead pay was easy.
Even so, it wasn’t any more glamorous then.
Victimized by weather, equipment failures,
tardy pilots, impertinent passengers, and jammed air traffic.
Now, it’s a shorter day flying from Atlanta to Frankfurt
than from Atlanta to DC.
Still, there’s only a sigh of resignation and a silent carrying on.
A cordial hug to ground crew members stationed at far-flung airports,
they have been “right-sized” with the rest.
The friendly skies vanished long ago
and all the marketing in the world can’t cover that truth.

ATL, February 2004
