Roaring Silence March 26, 2007

I am exhausted by the chase after jobs and money.
I don’t feel like a failure mostly due to the fact
I don’t feel much of anything anymore.
It’s like putting ice on your ankle or neck
Sure enough you don’t feel a thing for awhile
And at least it’s enough to get you by.

So what happens when the nerve endings warm up
And start generating pain again?
Distraction. It works for children.
So it’s a movie or music or absently placing calls
To half-forgotten people who think of you
As a stranger or vapor, nothing more.

If I gave voice to something bearing fruit
Wouldn’t someone have heard it and responded?
Instead it’s a roaring silence mixing up the air.
