Nobody wants to be alone,
nobody wants to stay together

I was sittin at the diner absently starin into space
When the talk at the next booth got a little loud
Someone cried “How could you bring me to this place?”
And another said “I think you’re a little too proud.”
Then she stormed out and everything just stopped,
Like the calm after stormy weather
He said to himself, “I don’t know why she popped.”
Nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.

Nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.
It’s a cold hard fact we don’t want to put up with each other.
It’s easier to treat you like a stranger than a brother.
Nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.

Sittin at the kitchen table at my parents’ house.
Hard to imagine they’ve been married more than fifty years.
Dad like a lion and Mom wouldn’t hurt a mouse.
I had to ask how they made it through the fears and tears.
He said “It’s easy to find a playmate if that’s what you’re looking for.”
She said “A neighbor’s pasture looks good in sunny weather.”
They looked at each other, said “It’s tough but worth livin for.”
“Son, nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.”

Nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.
It’s a fact lovers don’t want to tolerate each other.
He said “It’s easier to walk away than to even bother.
Nobody wants to be alone, nobody wants to stay together.”
